Withdrawals, Cancellation and Refunds Policies and Procedures
Course Fees
No student will commence a course until either a student loan payment has been confirmed or management has agreed upon a payment schedule.
Withdrawals and Refunds Procedures
Trainees will receive a refund of fees, minus costs*, in the following situations:
Note - Administration costs of 10% of the total course fee or $500 whichever is the lesser.
- The trainee formally withdraws from the course within 8 days after commencement or
- Where the trainee formally withdraws from the course after 8 days have elapsed from commencement, any refund of fees is at the discretion of the Company.
A trainee wishing to claim a refund of fees shall submit a claim in writing to the company, at which point the director responsible will verify the claim and, if accepted, arrange for payment within one calendar month.
Trainees will not receive a refund in the following situations:
- A statutory day(s) falls within the course. This has been taken into account to ensure NZQA requirements are fulfilled.
- Due to reasons beyond the control of the NZ Welding School. The school will ensure the impact on delivery time will be kept to a minimal.
Where the company closes a course, trainees will be refunded the proportion of the course tuition fees represented by the balance of the course to be taught. Additionally, the NZ Welding School will make all reasonable efforts to enable the trainees to complete course outcomes at an alternative training establishment.
Student Fee Protection
Te Kura Tuhono O Aotearoa Trust Account provides student fee protection coverage, and operates independently of the NZ Welding School.

Absenteeism There is a mandatory requirement for regular attendance.
If you have obtained a Student visa to study at the NZ Welding School you have been enrolled as a fulltime student. This requires you to attend all scheduled sessions on your academic timetable, which is noted on the attendance register and monitored closely. Failure to comply may result in cancellation of your Student Visa.
Remember It is in your best interest and that of the NZ Welding School to provide assistance and support to you to ensure you successfully complete the course programme.
Should you be absent at any time from your scheduled session you are required to notify the NZ Welding School immediately of your absence.
The following procedure applies if you have failed to notify the NZ Welding School of your absence:
- We will contact you on the day concerned.
- Information regarding your absence will be requested either verbally or in written form.
- The International Student Coordinator will be advised.
- If, as a result of your absence, it is determined that you require additional assistance, or the reason for your absence warrants intervention, the International Student Coordinator will request a meeting as soon as is practicable.
- If, as a result of the meeting, it is determined that you require the utilisation of an external support service, the International Student Coordinator will arrange for access to the appropriate agency and monitor progress accordingly.
The following procedure applies when you are absent longer than 7 days and have not established contact or are not responding to attempts to make contact:
- After 7 days have elapsed, the NZ Welding School will contact you by registered mail outlining attendance requirements and requesting contact.
- If you do not respond, after 14 days have elapsed, the NZ Welding School will contact you by registered mail outlining attendance requirements and requesting contact.
- If you do not respond, after 21 days have elapsed, the NZ Welding School reserves the right to formally withdraw you from the course and advise the NZIS of your withdrawal.
The following procedure will occur if you establish contact at any time during the above process:
- Information regarding your absence will be requested either verbally or in written form.
- The International Student Coordinator will be advised and will request a meeting as soon as is practicable.
- If, as a result of the meeting, it is determined that you require the utilisation of an external support service, the International Student Coordinator will arrange for access to the appropriate agency and monitor progress accordingly.
- If, as a result of the meeting, it is determined that you wish to formally withdraw, a completed course withdrawal form will be requested and the NZIS will be advised of your withdrawal.
Travel and Health Insurance
Eligibility for Health Services: Most International students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you require medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.moh.govt.nz Students entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand are:
- A resident or citizen of Australia; or
- A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or
- The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.
Health and Travel Insurance: International students must have the appropriate and current health and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. The New Zealand Welding School can provide application forms for Uni-care Insurance to provide travel and medical insurance for your tenure of study and for your travel to and from New Zealand. This service currently costs approximately $NZ196.00 - $NZ245.00, application form and details are included in the information pack provided. Should you want to use this service please return the completed form to us as soon as possible.
Accident Insurance: The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at http://www.acc.co.nz
Support Services The NZ Welding School has a designated International Student Coordinator available at all schools to advise and assist International students. A list of agencies is supplied in the Student Handbook, discussed in detail with each student as part of the induction day programme. The NZ Welding School is committed to ensuring each student is provided with assistance to ensure the transition to study in New Zealand is made as easy as possible.
